A Day in Maine

While I was on vacation in the lovely state of New Hampshire (NH), my family and I decided to take a day trip to Ogunquit, Maine. Let me tell you – it was a great trip! Ogunquit is about an hour and forty minutes from Manchester, NH, but the drive feels quite short when you’re with good company and some delicious munchies! Anyway, Ogunquit is one of those quaint little towns that you could imagine buying a house and living in. For my fellow Canadians, it’s comparable to Stratford, ON. There’s a playhouse for all you sophisticated theatre-goers, cozy restaurants, and a beautiful view. The best part about Ogunquit is that it’s right by the ocean – in fact, the town’s name translates to “beautiful place by the sea”.

Just before entering Ogunquit, we stopped at the Stonewall Kitchen. This specialty food store is incredible. Picture yourself in a Willy Wonka-style house with shelves upon shelves of jellies, dips, chocolates, and marmalades. The best part is all the samplers they have for visitors to taste. If you take a trip, you must try the orange-carrot marmalade and the sweet corn salsa! The Stonewall Kitchen is large yet homely, and everyone’s smiling as they taste chocolate sauces and unique flavours like curried ketchup and kale-arugula pesto. You won’t leave without buying a few jars for yourself!

Once we got to Ogunquit, the first order of business was to find a place to eat. Most of the food available is straight from the sea, so if you’re a salmon or halibut fan for example, you’re in for a very fresh treat! We ended up going to a nice Italian joint called Caffe Prego. There’s an option for indoor or outdoor seating. There’s nice Italian music playing in the background, and the staff was quite friendly. It’s a casual restaurant with delicious food. You may choose to take your leftovers home as the portions are huge. I had a pesto and chicken pizza which I would definitely recommend! There’s something for everyone at this comfortable restaurant, especially if you aren’t interested in seafood.

After eating, we took a nice long walk by the ocean. The scenery was lovely – there are a few resorts there if you choose to stay longer than a day. If I had the option, I would go back and spend a couple of days there. People were generally friendly, and the majority of them were tourists. Ogunquit, Maine is a good place to take your family for a nice time out. If you’re looking for a getaway, this is the place to go. So put your cell phone away and get your beach attire on! I hope you all consider a day in Maine as your next vacation. 🙂
